As the old Chinese saying goes, “At the age of 3, you can see how your adulthood will be. At the age of 7, you can see how your old age will be.” Pre-school education is considered the cornerstone of any child’s education, as it is a period of crucial development of a child’s cognitive abilities and social personalities. Parents are usually perplexed and overwhelmed when trying to deal with criticism at such a young age.
Is it true that many children like being praised but detest being criticized? Is it true that children usually resist instead of accepting constructive criticism? Is it true that parents believe their children are too young to recognize their mistakes, which leads to failure in immediately recognizing and correcting said mistakes? If children make mistakes, how do parents normally react? Giving appropriate feedback in order to regulate learning and behavior is a delicate task for which many parents are unprepared.
First of all, when children make mistakes, parents need to adapt their tone. Parents should also remember to crouch to dialogue with children, so that they feel they are treated with respect instead of oppression. As a result, they are able to calm themselves and recognize their mistakes. After any outburst, parents should remain calm and avoid yielding to their child’s requests - is it worse than not intervening.
Furthermore, children make mistakes repeatedly. In this case, parents instead of criticizing, parents should remind them with a simple question: "Do you remember that mom and dad told you last time not to do this?" Give children a chance to express the reasons for their actions. It is counterproductive to scold children by listing their past mistakes.
Ultimately, the principle of criticism is: never to insult children's personalities no matter how angry parents may be. When criticizing, parents should distinguish between the children themselves and the evaluation of the things they have done, and only criticize the problem or mistake at hand. Parents should learn how to let children know what has gone wrong using simple language.
